Launch Consulting | The Discovery Stand
Giving small brands the retail visibility they deserve
In collaboration with Launch Consulting, we developed a highly versatile, modular point-of-sale display solution for The Discovery Stand – a brand dedicated to spotlighting up-and-coming, independent, and small businesses. Moving away from a rigid, one-size-fits-all free-standing unit, the new design introduces a robust, rustic, and scalable crate-cube system engineered to fit seamlessly into diverse retail environments while meeting strict weight and space requirements.
Our initial free-standing display unit succeeded during the initial brand launch. However, post-launch market research revealed a significant hurdle: retail spaces varied drastically.
While some locations had ample floor space for a full-scale display, others – such as compact independent cafes or convenience store counters, only had room for a minimal footprint. The brand needed a rustic, premium solution that could look cohesive as a full-sized tower but could easily scale down to a single countertop unit, all while supporting a highly variable product weight load (ranging from light pouches to heavy glass jars and aluminium cans).
The solution β a modular Crate system.
Taking inspiration from traditional wooden crates, we evolved the concept into an innovative, structurally engineered modular system. We made sure that this solution was going to be rolled out across different store formats with ease. With that said, see a few highlights that we covered off –
- Robust engineering & Load support
The cubes are crafted from durable Spruce Pine to achieve a rustic, authentic look that complements small-batch, artisanal products. To ensure stability, we engineered a custom Base Plinth designed to anchor the display. Each individual crate cube was tested in-house to support up to 10kg of product load, allowing retailers to confidently stock heavy items like jars and beverages.
- Strategic fixing it innovation
To ensure safety and structural integrity when stacked, we designed a discreet fixing kit. This system strategically locks into the crate grooves on either side, securing the cubes to one another and to the base plinth. These fixing kits were supplied along with an easy installation guide, fixing kit, screws and screwdriver β allowing retail staff to assemble.
- Absolute scalability
The fixing kit allows complete flexibility depending on the retailer’s available square footage. Stores can opt for:
– A full 5-cube vertical tower (as seen in the wild).
– Shorter configurations of 2, 3, or 4 cubes.
– A standalone single cube counter display.
- Built-in Retail functionality
We maximized the utility of each crate by integrating crucial marketing and retail operations features directly into the build:
– Integrated POS plinth: A built-in panel on the left-hand side of each crate dedicated to point-of-sale marketing and consumer product education.
– Chalkboard strips: A reusable and wipeable chalk strip running along the bottom edge of each section, allowing store owners to easily write and update retail pricing.
– Branding: Seamless integration for a clean vinyl logo sticker.
The project was delivered on time and within budget, resulting in a highly successful rollout. Because of the system’s adaptability, adoption has spanned a wide array of retail formats, including:
π’ Independent grocery stores and farm shops
π’Β Local cafes
π’ Garden centres
π’Β High-footfall convenience stores
The rustic aesthetic perfectly aligns with the independent spirit of the brands on display, while the modular functionality gives sales teams the ultimate tool to pitch to any retail layout.
We very much enjoyed collaborating with the Launch Consulting team on this project, and look forward to our continued collaboration on future rollouts and projects!
